Technology offers a powerful tool to promote student learning. New technologies are constantly being developed that can change how students interact with each other, the instructor, and the course material. Here, I describe ways in which I have integrated technology into my curricula to improve students’ learning experiences.
One way I have found technology useful is to foster discussions among students. Today’s undergraduates use technology to discuss topics everyday through media like Facebook and Twitter. In multiple classes, I have used an online forum to encourage students to continue academic conversations outside of the classroom. By requesting students to post a response to a reading or a question for an upcoming discussion, I have found that students are more often ready and eager to participate in group discussions. Moreover, some students are uncomfortable speaking in front of others; an online discussion board offers these students an alternative venue to voice their opinions.
As technology continues to advance, I will continue to seek new ways to improve the learning experiences of students.
